China Approves New and Expanded Usage for Food-Contact Materials

On December 13, 2024, National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China (NHC) approved one additive with expanded usage and one new resin for use in food-contact materials. The substances and specifications are listed below. 

Additive with Expanded Usage

1. 1,3,5-Trimethyl-2,4,6-tris (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxytolyl) benzene (CAS No. 1709-70-2) is to be cleared for use in carbon monoxide-ethylene-propylene terpolymer at a maximum use level of 0.5%.

New Resin

1. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (CAS No. 147398-31-0) is to be cleared for use in plastics at the necessary dosage. The specific migration level (SML) is 0.05 mg/kg for crotonic acid. The use temperature of the PHA plastic materials using this substance as raw material may not exceed 100℃. In addition, it may not be used in food-contact materials and articles for infants and young children. The above restricted use requirements must be marked in accordance with the provisions of GB 4806.1.
