The California Environmental Protection Agency's (Cal/EPA) Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) announced its intent to list furfuryl alcohol (CAS Reg. No. 98-00-0), also known as 2-furanmethanol, as a chemical known to the State to cause cancer under Proposition 65. The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, or Proposition 65, requires the governor of California to publish, at least annually, a list of chemicals known to the State to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. Products containing listed substances may be subject to disclosure requirements under the law.
OEHHA proposed listing furfuryl alcohol through the authoritative bodies listing mechanism based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2014 report, "Cancer Assessment Document, Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Potential for Furfural and Furfuryl Alcohol." The notice of intent to list furfuryl alcohol can be found on OEHHA's website. In a separate announcement, OEHHA stated that furfural did not meet the requirements for listing under Proposition 65's authoritative bodies mechanism.
