ECHA Approves Stricter BPA Classification

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) has approved France's proposal to strengthen the harmonized classification and labelling (CLH) of bisphenol A (BPA) from a category 2 reproductive toxin to a category 1B toxin. France submitted the proposal in August 2013, claiming that BPA adversely affected sexual function and fertility.

RAC approved the reclassification after reviewing the evidence and comparing it with the criteria under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP Regulation). RAC determined that a multi-generation guideline study in mice and rats and several non-guideline studies provided evidence supporting claims that BPA negatively affects reproductive capacity. CLH classification does not take human exposure levels into account and is based solely on a substance's properties.

Further information on the CLP Regulation can be found on ECHA's website.
